FORGET ME NOT, AS MY TETHER IS CLIPPED Zachary Fabri USA/ 2012 / 14' 50’' Premiered in the exhibition Fore, at the Studio Museum in Harlem on November 11th, 2012. Forget Me Not, as My Tether Is Clipped was shot in black-and-white 16mm film and captures the artist with balloons tied to his dreadlocks. The scenes are in and around Harlem, where the artist lived for several years. One location is Marcus Garvey Park, a space devoted to the Jamaican-born activist. The video's message metaphorically examines the intersection of memory — signified by the balloons — and history and how past beliefs shape current perspective. Fabri was born and raised in Miami to Jamaican and Hungarian parents. Because of his biracial upbringing, class, economics, and politics are reflected in his work. The 37-year-old Fabri explains that "my works pulls from African-American politics, both the civil rights movement and what is going on today," he says. He moved to New York in 2000 and earned his MFA from Hunter College, City University of New York, after picking up a BFA in graphic design from the University of Florida. His residencies have taken him to Berlin, Brazil, Maine, and around New York City, and he additionally takes on graphic design and teaching gigs. To Fabri, performance art means he uses his body as a creative tool. He views his body as political and enjoys putting himself in various contexts. THE GREAT O Lisa Jeannin&Rolf Schuurman Suecia/ 2012 / 5' The artist duo Jeannin & Schuurmans build their own sets, and by consequence their own worlds, in the forests of Sweden. These are used for animations and sometimes a mixture between animation and live action video. Strange actions take place by home-made characters. Parts of the sets are, on a larger scale, being modified into installations or sculptures. In their stories they address the crossing of boundaries, often within the mind. Lisa was born 1972 in Uppsala (SE) Rolf was born 1972 in Oss (NL) lives and works in Hakebo (Sweden) Lisa Jeannin & Rolf Schuurman’s work consists out of drawings, sculptures, animations installations and sound. They fuse reality and art experience in a series of disconcerting imaginative modulations. All elements are equal. Every element performs on its own level and empathizes with its part in creating a magic game in which they’re given life. […] Often there are films within the films. Several layers of presence characterize their pieces. They want to find that, which cannot be expressed with the language, that which is beyond our consciousness. Lisa and Rolf often work with symbols as these allows you to cross borders into the unconscious mind and give the viewer a possibility to discover things they normally don’t see or feel. In the cracks of reality, the hidden, the indescribable, is where the mystery happens. Text from the artists webbpage written by Leif Holmstrand.
